Legal Disclaimers:
Except as noted all of these files were recorded in my own home studio and are being distributed on a not-for-profit basis.
Blue Guitar Singles: The backing tracks are courtesy of the "Band in the Pocket" cds available at Guitar Center or use the link below to contact the Five Feathers site. After digitally extracting the tracks I loaded them into Cool Edit Pro and used a Behringer MX2004A mixer to monitor, mix down and master the tracks. The 2000 songs used a Fernandez Strat with Lindy Fralin pickups plugged into an earlier incarnation of my own Blues Express amp. The 2001 songs used a MIM '69 Thinline RI with Lindy Fralin pickups and a Custom Shop 4-way selector switch plugged into a later version of the amp. The 2001 songs were miked with an SM57 right on the Jensen C10Q RI speaker inside the amp cabinet while the 2000 ones used two Mesa Boogie cabs(4x10 and 1x12) with one SM57 right on the 4x10 cab and a second SM57 in the air maybe 8 feet away. An ART tube mike preamp was used on the main SM57, and the output was sent to a GINA digital audio card in my 600MHz PIII computer. Sound Samples: The sound
samples were recorded to a computer hard drive with an SM57 mike up
the speaker grill cloth at a 45 ° angle from the speaker cone,
using a cheap ART tube microphone preamp. No processing was used at
all except for fade-ins and fade-outs, and adjusting the levels for a
max of maybe -3dB. Amp levels are set at a "comfortable" level for a
1000 sq ft condo (my guess would be 5 watts or less). Unless
otherwise noted, the guitar is my Fernandez vintage strat copy with a
set of Lindy Fralin pickups wired up with my Sup'rStrat harness. The
bright sound used a lot is the neck/bridge parallel linkage, the
deeper sound would be the neck by itself. The lead sound with a lot
of mids is the bridge pickup with a Fralin magnetic reflector plate
mounted on the bottom. The thick, muddier sound is the neck/bridge
series linkage, and I occasionally use the position next to it which
adds in the middle pickup in parallel (one of 4 different notched
positions available with the Sup'rStrat).
All of the electric guitar
parts (LP, Tele, Mustang) on these home recordings were sent directly
to a mixing board through various stomp boxes (like a Tube Screamer,
and Boss Chorus and Delay pedals). The earlier recordings were made
on a Sony stereo reel-to-reel deck bounced over to an Advent cassette
deck. In 1984 I got a Yamaha 4 track deck and added a "store-bought"
mixer in 1985. Here is a link to my site at SoundClick.Com which has some of my tunes:
As for the computer recording details, I ran the backing tracks through a BBE into the MX2004A routed to the main channel while all of the guitar parts used the Alt 3/4 buss. Most of the tracks were monitored through Sony headphones but the most recent ones used an old Magnavox CD boombox as a monitor so I could shed the headphones while playing guitar (Hooray!). For mixdown the backing tracks were routed to the mixer as noted above, while the guitar tracks were sent to mono channels routed to the Alt 3/4 bus, with plenty of reverb using the gold plate patch on my Lexicon Alex. By using the Alt 3/4 bus I was able to control the overall level of the guitar(s) and the reverb signal, and then patch it into the main bus which was then sent back to the computer through the GINA card. I recently modded the MX2004A so that post-fader aux sends for the 1st 4 channels aren't muted when you route them to the Alt 3/4 bus (I wish I had the bucks to get a Mackie, which has separate switches for Mute, 1/2 and 3/4!) So for the final mixdowns the signals were translated from digital to audio through the GINA card, mixed on the MX2004A with FX added in and then converted back to digital through the GINA card. While some people do all of their post-production mixing in the digital domain, I like having real knobs that I can fiddle around with...
The final version of "Sleazy Blues in E" added a second (and third) guitar track which used a H&K Tube Rotosphere between my guitar and the amp for the rotating speaker sound.
